I’m about to let you in on Scottsdale’s best-kept secret: The Boulders Resort.
This is for the couple whose wedding Pinterest board is testing the whole opposites attract theory. Half of it is a resort wedding. You want your friends staying close, cocktails by the pool, somewhere gorgeous (and convenient) to get ready, and a wedding weekend that doesn’t require twelve separate logistics spreadsheets. The other half is giant rock formations, open desert, warm sunsets, and photographs that make it extremely obvious you chose Arizona.
At The Boulders, you don’t have to choose. That’s what makes this place so different from any other Arizona wedding venue. The resort experience is already taken care of, while the landscape gives you something you can’t find anywhere else.
Why The Boulders Resort Doesn’t Feel Like Anything Else in Scottsdale
The Boulders Resort was named very literally. It was built around massive boulder formations that have been sitting in the Sonoran Desert for 12 million years. I know, I’ll give you a moment to Google that for yourself because I know what you’re thinking: What do you mean a luxury resort is sitting on 12-million-year-old boulders? I said the same thing!
These things make themselves KNOWN. You’re walking to meet your friends for drinks or heading toward the ceremony, and these huge granite formations are just… there. The resort was designed around the existing desert, so the rocks are literally a part of the property.
This is a dream for me as a photographer because we don’t have to disappear into the desert to find a good, classic Arizona backdrop. When the light starts hitting the rocks in just the right way, I can sneak you out for portraits and get you right back to your people.

What a Wedding Weekend at The Boulders Can Feel Like
You know I wouldn’t recommend a wedding venue to you based on looks alone. I’m not that vain! So let me tell you the other reasons I’m obsessed with The Boulders Resort.
If you’re asking your favorite people to fly to Arizona for your wedding, I’m guessing you want more time with them than whatever you can squeeze into the ceremony to the last song. Having everyone stay at the resort gives you all of those extra pockets of time that we all know make the best memories. The coffee runs with your girlfriends, late-night chats with your besties, and plenty of quality time with the people you invited.
By the time the actual wedding part of the weekend starts, everyone has gotten to know each other and had the haven’t seen you in 10 years chats, so your day can feel like a relaxed celebration with zero get-to-know-you games.
This makes for the best kinds of wedding photos, too, because everyone is already comfortable with each other, which translates into more genuine interactions. More laughs, smiles, hugs, and tears. All the things we love to see in a wedding gallery.
Where Guests Can Stay for a Boulders Resort Wedding
One of the biggest perks of getting married at The Boulders is that your guests don’t have to scatter across Scottsdale the second the welcome drinks are over.
The resort has casitas, larger villas, and haciendas, so your friends and family can stay right on the property and actually make a weekend out of being there. If you’ve got siblings, cousins, or a group of friends who would happily turn your wedding into a three-day sleepover, the larger accommodations are especially worth asking about.
I love this for destination weddings because so many of the memories you end up talking about later happen outside the official timeline. Someone wanders over for coffee in the morning, your friends end up at the pool together, or half the group decides they’re getting one more drink after the welcome party.
Ask The Boulders about current room-block options when you inquire about your wedding date. Keeping everyone close makes the logistics easier, obviously, but mostly it gives you more time with the people who came all the way to Arizona to celebrate you.

What Your Guests Can Do During a Boulders Resort Wedding Weekend
The Boulders makes this part of a wedding weekend easy-breezy. Your guests can book a spa day, play a round of golf, hang by the pool, or meet up for dinner and drinks without leaving the resort. Which also means you don’t have to become everyone’s unpaid Scottsdale tour guide for the weekend. A win for all involved.
If people do want to explore, the resort sits in North Scottsdale near Carefree and Cave Creek, so there are plenty of options nearby without turning their free afternoon into a whole expedition.
This is another reason I love The Boulders for a destination wedding. Everyone gets to treat the trip like an actual vacation, and you can plan a welcome drink or two without feeling responsible for filling every open hour on the itinerary. By the time the wedding starts, your people have already spent a day or two hanging out together, which is exactly the kind of energy I want walking into your ceremony.
My Favorite Boulders Resort Ceremony Spaces
Okay, so we’ve established that The Boulders Resort is basically its own little desert world for the weekend. Now we need to figure out where inside that world you’re saying your vows.
The outdoor ceremony spaces here feel surprisingly different from each other, which is why I recommend choosing one based on more than the capacity alone. I want you to think about what you want surrounding you when you have your first kiss. Do you want those famous boulders close enough to touch? Something smaller where everyone feels tucked in close? Or a wide-open view that gives a bigger wedding room to breathe?
Let me show you your options!
The Organic Garden
If your guest list is small (I’m talking like 30 people) and you want everyone right there with you, I’d start with the Organic Garden.
This space is tucked into the property, with boulder formations around the garden and water woven into the setting. Around sunset, the whole thing starts picking up that warm Arizona light, and everything glows in a way that makes me grateful to be a wedding photographer.
I think this one works really well for the couple who wants their wedding to feel like one big dinner party. Everything is close enough to catch the quiet comments and see everyone’s tears during the vows. It still feels like a full wedding. You just get to experience it without several rows of people sitting so far away that you have to hand out little binoculars.
If intimate, relaxed, and connected sounds like your version of the day, put this one on your tour list.
19th Green
The 19th Green is for you if you want your wedding to feel spacious and expansive. You get the golf course stretching out around the ceremony with Pinnacle Peak in the distance, which gives this space a sweeping feeling. It can also hold up to 250 guests for ceremonies and 200 for receptions, so this is a great option for bigger guest lists.
I love recommending this space for couples who want a larger wedding without stuffing everyone into a ballroom and losing the reason you flew everyone to Arizona specifically. There’s plenty of sky, the view carries way past the ceremony chairs, and your guests get that immediate ohhh, okay, I get it moment when they sit down.
Promise Rock
I saved my favorite for last!
If you booked The Boulders Resort because you can’t stop thinking about those 12-million-year-old boulders I mentioned earlier, Promise Rock is probably going to make you forget about the other ceremony spaces.
The venue holds up to 150 guests, and the boulders basically frame you and your officiant at the front of the aisle. It’s literally picture perfect! There’s also a waterfall, cacti, and desert landscaping to pull in even more of that classic Arizona look.
From my side of the camera, I’m using those rocks for anything I can. As a backdrop, to play with scale, to bounce light off of, to add texture— you name it, these rocks deliver.

You Don’t Have to Leave the Resort for a Layered Gallery
Promise Rock might be the show-off of the property, but I promise your entire wedding gallery won’t be you standing next to progressively different rocks.
The Boulders Resort gives me SO much more to work with throughout the day. There’s open desert and mountain views, but also resort architecture, landscaped greenery, quieter corners, and light that keeps changing as the sun moves across the property.
That means your photos can shift with the wedding. Earlier in the day, I might use softer light around the resort while everyone is getting ready. Later, we can lean into the desert when the sun gets lower, and the rocks start doing their thing. Once it’s dark and everyone has made their way to the dance floor, I’ll bring out the flash and let the gallery get a little more fun.
I want you to look through your photos and feel like you experienced an entire day, not one very long portrait session with a really impressive rock collection. The variety is already here. We just get to use it when it makes sense.
How I’d Structure a Wedding Day at The Boulders Resort
The morning starts with you getting ready in a gorgeous suite with your favorite people nearby. Music blasting, fuzzy slippers on, coffee order in hand, and inside jokes already being made. This part of the day gets to be relaxed because we can build a ton of breathing room into your timeline since you’re staying on the property.
Before the ceremony, we can tuck ourselves away somewhere private for your first look and private vows. I’ll find us somewhere quiet but with enough space that you can keep the words between just the two of you while I photograph from a distance.
Once you walk down the aisle, the way I photograph the day changes. I’m still getting the huge ceremony view because, hello, the boulders. I’m also watching for your mom’s soft tears, your friends laughing across the aisle, and whatever else is happening just outside the obvious moments.
Cocktail hour is when I get to disappear into the crowd for a while, watching for more of those sweet little moments. I’m also watching the light so when those rocks start glowing, I’m coming to find you. We’ll sneak away for fifteen minutes, make the desert portraits you came here for, and get you back before anybody finishes wondering where you went.
After that, bring on the party and the flash! Finish the night on the dance floor, and everyone can happily walk 100 feet to their respective suites where they’ll all be saying “best night ever.”
Is The Boulders Resort Right for Your Wedding?
If your ears have been perking up while you’ve been reading this, I can guess that The Boulders is starting to feel like your venue. But let me give you a little bit more insight just so you can be sure.
I’d put it high on your list if you want your wedding to feel unmistakably Arizona, and you care about your guests having a 10/10 weekend while they’re here. You want everyone staying close, plenty happening outside the wedding itself, and a venue that already has enough personality that you’re not responsible for creating every ounce of atmosphere yourself.
You’ll love it even more if photography is a big priority. There’s enough variety here for the huge desert portraits you’ve been saving, quieter documentary moments with your people, film that feels soft and nostalgic, and flash photos once everyone has completely given up on behaving.
Most importantly, I think The Boulders works for couples who want to experience their wedding as much as they want their guests to.
You can have the photos that made you fall in love with Arizona without spending half the day chasing them. Your people stay close, the day keeps moving, and those crazy rocks are just sitting there waiting for us whenever the light decides to show off.

When is the Best Time of Year for a Boulders Resort Wedding?
The Boulders can host weddings year-round, but if you’re asking me when I’d choose to get married here, November through March. Easily.
So much of what makes this venue worth booking happens outside. Promise Rock, the desert views, cocktail hour under the open sky, and those golden-hour portraits among the boulders are all a lot more enjoyable when nobody is quietly wondering how fast they can get back to the air conditioning.
Arizona summers are no joke, and I’m personally not trying to convince you that standing outside in 105-degree heat is part of the experience. If you’re dreaming about an outdoor ceremony and want your guests to spend real time enjoying the property, the cooler months make way more sense.
November through March gives you much more flexibility with your timeline too. We can use the outdoor spaces throughout the day instead of building everything around surviving the hottest hours.
Weather can always pull something weird, so I’d still ask The Boulders about backup plans. But if the desert is one of the main reasons you fell for this venue, I’d give yourself the best chance to enjoy it.

Questions About Getting Married at The Boulders Resort in Scottsdale
How many guests can The Boulders Resort accommodate for a wedding?
It depends on which space you choose. The Organic Garden is currently listed for around 30 guests, Promise Rock can hold up to 150, and the 19th Green can accommodate up to 250 for ceremonies and 200 for receptions.
I’d pay attention to more than the maximum number, though. Think about how you want everyone to feel once they’re sitting there. Thirty people tucked into the Organic Garden create a very different wedding than 200 people looking out toward Pinnacle Peak.
Can wedding guests stay at The Boulders Resort?
Yes! The resort has casitas along with larger villas and haciendas, so your guests can stay right on the property and make a whole weekend out of being there. If you’re planning a destination wedding, room blocks are a really good option. The less time everyone spends coordinating rides across Scottsdale, the more time they get to spend together.
What outdoor wedding locations are available at The Boulders?
The Boulders has several outdoor wedding spaces, including Promise Rock, the Organic Garden, the 19th Green, Duck Pond, and El Pedregal Courtyard. If the landscape is one of your biggest priorities, I’d start with the first three. They each give you a completely different version of Arizona, so tour them in person before committing based on photos alone.
Does The Boulders have indoor wedding spaces?
Yes. The resort also has indoor spaces for receptions and events, including ballroom options at the Main Lodge and El Pedregal. Even if you’re dead set on getting married outside, ask to see them during your tour. Arizona weather enjoys reminding everyone who’s in charge occasionally, and knowing you like the backup plan makes that conversation less stressful.
Is The Boulders Resort good for a destination wedding?
VERY.
Your guests can stay on property and already have restaurants, pools, golf, spa experiences, and plenty of ways to fill their downtime. You can plan a few things together without becoming responsible for entertaining everyone every hour they’re in Arizona.
Plus, they get to wake up surrounded by the same desert landscape you fell in love with instead of only experiencing it during the ceremony.
How much does a wedding at The Boulders Resort cost?
The Boulders Resort doesn’t publicly list one set wedding price since the total can change based on your date, guest count, spaces, food and beverage selections, and lodging needs.
I’d reach out to the resort directly for current pricing and ask about site fees, food-and-beverage minimums, service charges, rentals, and room blocks. That’ll give you a much more useful number than whatever three-year-old wedding budget Google decides to dig up.
How far is the Boulders Resort from a major international airport?
The Boulders Resort is about 33 miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), according to the resort, which makes it a pretty easy destination wedding option for guests flying in from out of town.
They can land in Phoenix, grab their bags, and head straight toward North Scottsdale without adding another flight or a multi-hour drive to the trip. Drive time will depend on traffic, so I’d give your guests a little wiggle room when you’re sharing arrival recommendations or planning anything for the first night.

The Boulders Resort keeps giving me reasons to keep it at the top of my favorites list. You get the resort weekend your guests will talk about for years, plus a desert backdrop that screams Arizona. That combination is hard to find anywhere else in the state.
If you’re picturing your wedding day surrounded by 12-million-year-old boulders, with the people you love most staying just steps away, this venue deserves a spot on your list. I’d start by touring Promise Rock, the Organic Garden, and the 19th Green in person so you can feel which one matches the day you’re imagining.
