POV: You’ve been scrolling through what feels like hundreds of wedding venues in Phoenix, Arizona, and nothing is making you go, “yes—this is the one!”
Everything starts to blur together. A little too traditional. Too expected. Just not quite you.
That’s exactly why I rave about Monroe Street Abbey in downtown Phoenix. It’s personal, intentional, and full of character in a way that doesn’t need to be forced or overdesigned.
If you’re someone who cares about how a space feels just as much as how it looks, this is the place.

An Arizona Wedding Venue with History & Character
The Abbey on Monroe wasn’t always a wedding venue. What started as a church in 1929 faced a devastating fire in the 80s, leaving the space almost unrecognizable. But what came after years of restoration and care is something completely different. You can feel the history in the walls, see it in the texture, in the way the light moves through the space. It’s not outdated or overly preserved. Instead, it feels lived-in and intentional— it’s clear it’s been given a second life.
That’s part of what makes it one of the more unique wedding venues in Phoenix. It doesn’t feel like a blank canvas you have to fill. It already has a story— you just get to step into it and make it your own. You can feel that from the second you walk in.
A Phoenix Wedding Venue That Blends Indoor & Outdoor Spaces
The architecture is what hits you first. The open ceilings, unique windows, and worn-in brick feel layered in a way that’s hard to replicate in any other venue. It’s the perfect amount of drama without being overwhelming.
I love the way it blends the indoor and outdoor spaces so seamlessly. The Garden Court, tucked behind the brick facade, brings in soft light and almost feels like a secret garden. The greenery, warm desert tones, and open ceilings— it all comes together in a way that feels deliberate.
If you’ve been searching for an indoor/outdoor wedding venue in Phoenix but still want something with structure, The Abbey on Monroe really is the best of both worlds. You don’t have to choose between nature and architecture here. They exist together in a way that makes perfect sense.

Every Corner is a Shot Waiting to Happen
This is the part where I start to get really excited as a photographer! Because you don’t have to hunt for good light or backdrops here— they’re already built into the space. Not in a “we can make it work” or “we’ll edit that later” kind of way, but in a “this is perfect as is” way.
You don’t have to search for good spots here. They’re literally everywhere!
The Garden Court
This is typically where ceremonies happen, and for good reason.
The light shines through the flower-shaped window and creates the most stunning shadows across the space. It’s soft, romantic, and SO inviting. It feels easy to picture yourself getting married here— and truly enjoying it.

The Gallery
Inside, the Gallery has these high ceilings and layered textures that immediately make everything feel elevated.
It’s perfect for intimate dinners or receptions where you still want that sense of scale, but without losing the closeness of a smaller venue.
This is where you can design something really special. Think long tables, candlelight, shared meals, and everyone gathered together. It holds that balance really well.

The Loft
The Loft is one of the quieter, tucked-away spaces that feels a bit more secluded. It’s perfect for private vows, a secret first look, or just sneaking away for a moment between just the two of you.
It overlooks the main space, which provides a really cool view (and photo op!). You can see everything happening without being right in the middle.
It’s also such a good spot for more intimate portraits where you and your partner can just be present together.

The In-Between
Honestly, some of my favorite shots don’t happen in the main rooms at all. (I know, surprising, right?!) They happen in the in-between! The moments you’re not performing for anyone. The ones where you forget I’m even there.
The archways, the crumbly walls, the windows filtering in pockets of soft light. Those are the places that feel the most real and unposed. They’re the moments I’m always watching for, and this place gives so many opportunities for them to happen naturally.

Designing A Wedding Day That Feels Intimate and Intended
The best thing about this space is that you don’t need to overdo it. The venue already brings so much. So instead of trying to fill it, you get to focus on what matters most to you.
Maybe it’s ensuring a feeling of togetherness among your guests, building in extra time for portraits so it doesn’t feel like you’re squeezing it in between everything else. Maybe it’s skipping all of the traditional wedding dos. You get to decide what really matters and leave the rest.
This is the kind of space that naturally slows down the day, giving you time to really enjoy yourself and your guests.
Your Wedding Timeline At Monroe Street Abbey
Imagine this—You start your day slowly, getting ready at a nearby hotel or Airbnb (stay until the end for my favorite spots!). Music playing, coffee in hand, you and your best friend laughing while she’s trying to steam a dress in the corner, no one rushing you out the door.
When you arrive at the Abbey, you’re not worrying about setting up or logistics. You’re able to be present, which is the whole point!
You do a first look with just you two, in one of the tucked-away corners, with just the right amount of privacy. Reading your vows to each other, really soaking in the moment, and your time alone.
A Seamless Ceremony & Reception Experience
Your ceremony is set up perfectly in the Garden Court by their in-house team, made up of over 100 highly trained individuals, all with one common goal— to make your day as perfect as possible. You feel relaxed and calm, knowing everything is as you envisioned.
You say “I do” surrounded by greenery, florals, and soft desert light filtering through the open ceiling.
Afterwards, your guests go to enjoy cocktails in the Loft with the flexible indoor/outdoor space. Plenty of room for conversing while still feeling close-knit.
When you return, the Garden Court has been transformed from your ceremony to the dinner. One long table for all of your guests— passing plates, sharing stories, and staying seated longer than planned because nobody wants it to end.
Ending the Night Fully Present (and Not Ready for It to Be Over)
As the sun starts to set, we sneak away for golden hour portraits around the property using the archways, unique windows, and staircases to create portraits that feel natural but still look purposeful.
Then, when you come back to join your guests, the music starts, and you dance until the moon comes up.
At Monroe Street Abbey, you don’t have to follow a template. You don’t need to do anything just because it’s what weddings look like. Instead, you get to build a day that actually fits your love story, and this venue supports that. Nothing about this space forces you into a mold, which is rare to find in a wedding venue.

Why Monroe Street Abbey is One Of The Best Small Wedding Venues in Phoenix, AZ
There are a lot of wedding venues in Phoenix, but not many of them truly cater to small and intimate weddings. It can be tricky to find a space that doesn’t feel either too big and empty or too small and cramped. The Abbey somehow lands right in the middle. It keeps everyone close but still gives you enough space not to feel suffocated.
AND the layout makes a huge difference! You’re not bouncing between disconnected spaces or trying to figure out how to flow between them. It all transitions very naturally— from your ceremony, to cocktails, to dinner— so the day feels smooth. You’re not constantly being pulled from one place to the next, which changes how present you’re able to be during the day.
The in-house team plays a massive role. This part matters way more than most people expect. They’re extremely dialed in, which means you’re not managing vendors, answering questions, or getting pulled out of moments to make decisions. You get to be present, relax, and experience your day fully.
But what I think really sets this place apart is the atmosphere. Some venues feel like you have to pull the vibes out of thin air. This one already has it!
